Irene Gomez Chavolla, M.Ed.-IABE President, received her BS in elementary education from Idaho State University, her M.A. in Curriculum and Instruction, with an emphasis in ESL/Bilingual Education from Boise State University. She has an Educational Administration degree from the University of Idaho. She is currently working on her superintendent endorsement. Irene has been involved in public education for the past 25 years. Her teaching experiences range from kindergarten to high school. Irene served as the State Title I Migrant and Even Start Coordinator for the state of Idaho for 10 years. She is currently employed at the Middleton School District as the LEP Facilitator.
Dr. Fernanda M. Brendefur, Vice President Title III-LEP Coordinator, Idaho State Department of Education. Dr. Fernanda M. Brendefur is the Title III/LEP Coordinator at the Idaho State Department of Education. Fernanda personally knows the unique linguistic, academic and cultural needs of Limited English Proficient (LEP) students as she was a LEP student herself. Fernanda’s family moved to the U.S. from Santiago, Chile when she was seven years old and school was a struggle for her until she became proficient in her social and academic English. Her experiences ignited a passion for teaching LEP and migrant students the English language, academic content, and multiculturalism. Fernanda was an ESL and Spanish teacher for six years and taught at Boise State University for five years. Fernanda received her Ed.D. and Masters from Boise State University in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in Bilingual/ESL/Multicultural Education and her B.A. from the University of California at Irvine in Comparative Literature and Spanish.
Marta A. Hernandez, M. Ed-IABE Secretary, Marta is a teacher at Burley Junior High School. She received her Associate of Arts Degree in Elementary Education from the College of Southern Idaho. Marta received her BS in Elementary Education from Idaho State University, and an M.A. in Curriculum and Instruction, with an emphasis in ESL/Bilingual Education from Boise State University. Her current teaching position includes teaching the subjects of Geography and U.S. History. She serves as advisor to BJHS Spanish Club/Dancers and 8th grade Student Council. Marta participates in national, regional, and local organizations in which education is improved or enhanced and health care is accessible. Marta has served in various capacities in the Idaho Education Association and National Education Association. Marta serves on the Board of Directors for Family Health Services and is currently the President.
Zulema Macias, IABE Treasurer, She has had this position for over 10 years. She is currently a 4th teacher at White Pine Intermediate School in Burley. She has taught in the public schools for 27 years and was a paraprofessional for 5 years before becoming a teacher. She has a M.A. in Curriculum and Instruction from BSU. She is an executive board member for the Cassia County Education Association.
Imelda L. Gomez, Magic Valley Chapter President M.Ed., Imelda is a teacher at Mountain View Elementary in Burley, Idaho. She received her B.A. in elementary education from Idaho State University, and her M.A. in Curriculum and Instruction, with an emphasis in ESL/Bilingual education from Boise State University. A Reading Recovery Teacher and Teacher Leader certificate was obtained from Texas Woman's University, in Denton, Texas. She has consulted and trained teachers in Reading Recovery in the Magic Valley and Northern Idaho from 1994-2001. She has 22 years of teaching experience ranging from kindergarten through sixth grade. She has served on the board of directors for 8 years.
Monica Pauley, Snake River Chapter President. Monica started her professional career with the Idaho Falls School District in 1991. Since 1993 she has worked in the Federal Programs area for Idaho Falls School District 91 where she serves as the Federal Programs Assistant. Monica has trained staff and presented Federal Programs Information at the local, state and national level. Monica has received several awards including: Booster Club President of Excellence for Bonneville High School, Volunteer of the Year for Bonneville High School, Emissary of Excellence for the Idaho Falls School District, Bonneville Youth Development Council Youth Role Model Award and the IABE Outstanding Administrator Award. Monica is also an Idaho Falls Post Register Advisory Board Member. Monica loves her job and enjoys working with her team of highly qualified staff.
Teresa Valero, Treasure Valley Chapter President. Teresa Valero, Treasure Valley Chapter President, Migrant Regional Coordinator and Family Liaison in the Kuna School District. She has 5 girls and 2 grandchildren and a husband that have grown to be patient and understanding with her line of work. She attended BYU, Provo, Utah for 1 year and plans to return to school sometime in the future. She knows it is never too late to improve and gain more knowledge. She enjoys working with her coworkers and families in her district and outside of her district. She hopes that her services have encouraged at least someone to make a difference in this world. Teresa has a smile that will bring you comfort and support in whatever you decide to do in life. She says the best thing you can do is to empower all parents with the knowledge of becoming a better person. She knows that it has to start at home and within your heart, this is the change that would make a difference in our lives.
Mary Lou Wells, Community Member, is the Migrant Education Program Coordinator for the Idaho State Department of Education. Prior to her position there, Mary Lou worked in the Vallivue School District in many capacities. She was an Elementary ESL teacher for 6 years, a 1st grade teacher for 3 years and a Kindergarten teacher for 1 year. She is very passionate in her work with and for all children. Mary Lou holds the following degrees: BA in Elementary Education, MA in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in Bilingual/ESL Education and an M.Ed. in Educational Leadership.
